Aspa Gospodini

Professor

Anastasia Aspasia (Aspa) Gospodini is a Professor of Urban Planning and Design, Dipl. Architect, MSc, PhD from the Bartlett School, UCL. She is the Director of the Research Laboratory on “Urban Morphology and Design” and the Director of the Postgraduate Program “Urban Regeneration, Urban Development and Real Estate Market” at the Department of Planning and Regional Development, University of Thessaly. She has served as Vice-Chair of the Thessaloniki Spatial Planning and Environmental Protection Organization (ORTHE) (2010-11).

Her research interests focus on:

  • Urban Regeneration

  • Regeneration of Urban Waterfronts

  • Regeneration for the creation of sustainable mobility networks (pedestrian streets, bicycle lanes, traffic-calmed streets)

  • Urban regeneration and revitalization of historic centers

  • Urban regeneration and adaptive reuse of vacant urban spaces, such as disused or underused military camps, underused industrial areas, etc.

  • Urban Regeneration & Revitalization of degraded residential areas

  • Environmental urban design and networks of green and blue infrastructure

  • Green energy urban design (zero carbon cities)

  • Smart cities

  • Urban resilience and sustainable urban development

  • Economic crisis and spatial impacts on Greek cities (shrinking cities)

  • Spatial transformations of the post-industrial city & new urban economies

  • Hosting of large international events (Olympic Games, World Expo, etc.) and their spatial transformations

  • Globalization & ‘Place Identity’

She has published numerous research articles in scientific journals and authored over 10 books. Her published work has been recognized with 4 international awards from AESOP & GPEAN (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008) for the best published paper in urban planning. Her publications have received more than 900 citations.

She is a member of the editorial boards of 8 international journals in urban planning and design and serves as Chair of the Organizing and Scientific Committees of the series of International Conferences ‘CHANGING CITIES: Spatial, Design, Landscape and Socioeconomic dimensions’ (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019), which have attracted significant interest from the international academic community over the past decade.
