Sotiris Koukoulas

Associate Professor

Sotiris Koukoulas currently serves as an Associate Professor of Remote Sensing, Spatial and Environmental Planning at the University of Thessaly. He holds a degree in Environmental Sciences from the University of the Aegean, a Master’s degree specializing in Statistics from Lancaster University, UK, and a PhD in Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) from the Department of Geography at King’s College London.

Dr. Koukoulas’s research focuses on the study of landscape changes (both coastal and inland) using Remote Sensing and GIS technologies. His work primarily involves mapping, spatial analysis, monitoring, and modeling of land cover/use changes in coastal and peri-urban areas.

He has published 72 peer-reviewed articles in scientific journals, conference proceedings, edited volumes, and scientific reports. Some of the international journals where his work has appeared include the International Journal of Applied Earth Observation and Geoinformation, International Journal of Remote Sensing, Photogrammetric Engineering and Remote Sensing, Remote Sensing, Computers, Environment and Urban Systems, Cities, Regional Environmental Change, International Journal of Sustainable Development and World Ecology, Applied Geography, and Science of the Total Environment, among others.

Dr. Koukoulas’s research has been funded by both national and European sources, with funding totaling approximately half a million euros.
